Concern Worldwide is today honouring International Women’s Day – a global celebration of the achievements of women. This year’s theme is ‘Empowering Women and Girls: Inspiring Futures’ and Concern are delighted to celebrate today in recognition of women across the globe, particularly those that they currently work with in 25 of the world’s poorest countries.
Inequality is still rife across in the world –
• 70% of the one billion people living on less than a pound a day are women
• Over 66% of the world’s 876 million illiterate people are women
• More than 80% of the world’s estimated 40 million refugees are women and children
• Women own less than 1% of the world’s property
Concern Worldwide is addressing the problem by helping women to become healthy, educated, and empowered to help themselves, their family and their community. It has been shown that educating girls has the greatest impact on their health, more so than focusing on nutrition, water or sanitation.
By providing teacher training in Sierra Leone, Concern are helping poor children to the education that is key to a better life. Many poor communities cannot afford the proper training for teachers. For example Adama Koroma, a primary school teacher in Tonkolili, Sierra Leone, has spent 7 years as an untrained and unqualified teacher. Now, thanks to Concern’s help, Adama is now enrolled in educational training and is expressing great pride in her new learning and status.
Adama said –
I have already made some positive changes in my approach to classroom teaching. I encourage all my women colleagues supported by Concern to take our studies very seriously, so that other educated women in our communities will see us as role models and be attracted into the teaching field as well.
Why not show your support to women less fortunate by purchasing a teacher Training gift from Concern today. This gift can provide 6 months training for one teacher. It’s a gift that truly keeps on giving…
