There are a number of days in the yearly calendar worth noting, your Mum’s birthday for example, Valentine’s day, if you’re in one of those type of relationships, or maybe the day your tax returns need to be in. But one day that skipped past unnoticed this year was E Day.
E day? Was that something to do with the war – nope, E day was the UK’s first Energy Saving Day, which sounds like a fantastic idea on paper, but it slipped by without a murmur. There could have been a number of reasons why this happened, but the main one appeared to be that the organisers forgot to tell anyone it was happening! Not a great way to publicise this save the planet initiative!
The fact that there was a 0.1% rise in energy consumption on E Day shows you just how far the date had been burned into the nations conscience. The idea was that every household should turn off any electrical appliances in their house that were not in use for the day, and the National Power Grid would monitor any drop in power, showing us all how much we waste on a daily basis and how naughty we are.
But, if you don’t tell people E Day is on, We Say that it’s not going to be too successful!
