Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio has very kindly committed a staggering $1 million to the WWF charity tiger conservation scheme. The money, donated through his Fund at the California Community Foundation, coincides with DiCaprio’s plan to attend the historic tiger summit meeting in Russia to support WWF’s conservation efforts.
The meeting of world leaders in St. Petersburg to discuss saving the tiger from extinction is long overdue, with numbers dropping from 100,000 to just 3,200 in the last century. DiCaprio is a WWF board member and only recently visited Nepal and Bhutan to check out tiger habitats alongside anti poaching staff. Whilst there, he met up with community members and learnt how WWF scientists were able to monitor the park’s tigers and their habits.
Leonardo DiCaprio said –
Illegal poaching of tigers for their parts and massive habitat loss due to palm oil, timber and paper production are driving this species to extinction. If we don’t take action now, one of the most iconic animals on our planet could be gone in just a few decades. By saving tigers, we can also protect some of our last remaining ancient forests and improve the lives of indigenous communities.
Leonardo’s $1million donation to help support worldwide anti poaching efforts is both generous and timely, adding a much needed celebrity spotlight not only to the Tiger Summit in Russia, but also the need to act now in the conservation of tigers.
President and CEO of World Wildlife Fund, Carter Roberts, said –
It’s been a pleasure to work with Leo. He cares deeply about the fate of tigers and the human communities with whom they share their habitat. He is committing his time, his wealth, and most importantly, his talent to this cause. His financial commitment will spark urgent on-the-ground conservation for tigers. His storytelling will inspire people around the world to help.
