Oxfam UK is calling for help after fierce fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo has forced thousands of people to flee from their homes. Many are finding their way into makeshift camps as people desperately looking for security, food and clean drinking water.
Oxfam UK has already set up camps in the region but the size is ever increasing as thousands more people flee from the fighting. In the camps, water tanks and tap stands have been created to give people clean water, whilst also providing sanitation facilities. Oxfam are also teaching camp leaders basic health skills to protect people from the spread of disease. The sudden influx of homeless people now means Oxfam desperately need to ramp-up relief efforts.
Oxfam Director for the Democratic Republic of Congo, Juliette Prodhan, said –
‘The numbers fleeing are staggering. People urgently need our help. The latest fighting has spread fear and panic and left many more people living in very harsh conditions.’
As the fighting in Congo continues, many people cannot leave the camps and return home, but with your help Oxfam can provide these poor people with safe water and sanitation.
