Shelter have launched a campaign to get Ruth Kelly – the Minister in charge of Housing – to announce the Government’s intent to begin the process of modernising the standard definition of overcrowding.
UK charity Shelter have set up a simple email form which can be completed in under a minute. All you need to do is input your name, email address and post code and the form will populate the relevant information in a set email which will aim to put pressure on Ruth Kelly to do the right thing.

The Shelter press release is as follows :
“In 2004, years of Shelter lobbying paid off when the Housing Act became law. The Act included a Government promise to update the Dickensian definition of overcrowding, which allows kitchens to be counted as bedrooms.
Last year, pressure from Shelter campaigners was instrumental in prompting Ruth Kelly, the Minister in charge of housing, to announce the Government’s intent to begin the process of modernising the standard.
However, on the 3rd anniversary of the passing of the Housing Act, and almost a year since they said they’d act, the Government has moved no further forward.
Please email Ruth Kelly to demand she updates the definition of overcrowding
By introducing a fairer, more modern measure, we can begin to tackle the overcrowding crisis and its disastrous effects on the health, education and well-being of more than 950,000 children in Britain.
Your help adds strength to Shelter’s campaign. With your support Shelter can achieve their goal – and give overcrowded children the room they need to grow.”
