All donations to Comic Relief via SMS will be received in full by the children’s charity. To maximise the amount donated to Comic Relief, the Treasury has agreed to waive the usual VAT costs to coincide with the dropped charges usually applied by UK phone operators.
Trustee for Comic Relief, Emma Freud, said –
The spirit of the entire mobile industry has taken our breath away. We believe receiving every penny from texts donated by the public will make the most remarkable difference.
Comic Relief are also making a major push into social networking sites, with over a month of intensive activity around this year’s charity push. The event will this year launch channels on YouTube, Flickr and Twitter. Each site will be hosted by a celebrity who will be releasing backstage images, gossip and instant news to the user via the online channels.
