Many people leave strange gifts to people they leave behind in their last will and testament, and Oxfam UK are no exception! A lifelong supporter of the charity called Nicholas Newlife left his entire estate to Oxfam when he passed away 3 years ago, and a few interesting items where amongst his belongings.
Legacies have come in all shapes and sizes over the years, and Oxfam can receive up to 600 every 12 months, with values of up to a total of £13m! But what Mr. Newlife left was something quite different. Along with the contents of his estate were a number of bets which were wagered over the years, but could obviously never be collected by Mr. Newlife since his passing.
These amazing bet legacies have already won Oxfam a whopping £16,750, when Roger Federer won his 14 Grand Slam title. Mr. Newlife placed £250 on Roger at odds of 66/1, netting the charity a handsome return on the wager. But with the way the semi finals are looking this coming weekend, we could have a bit of a British crunch time conundrum if Roger meets Andy Murray in the final.
Mr Newlife also put a bet on that Federer would win Wimbledon seven times before 2020, and in this year’s championship he stands as good a chance as any. Unfortunately, he may end up playing against our very own Andy Murray if they beat Djokovic and Tsonga respectively. Odds have not been disclosed on what Oxfam stand to receive off the back of a Federer win, but judging from the previous winnings, it could well be substantial.
Looks like if it ends in a Federer vs Murray final, British Oxfam supporters could well be torn on who to cheer for in the final!
